Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Hanuman. The day is observed across India by Hindus. The day falls on the 15th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra. This year Hanuman Jayanti falls on April 8 on Chaitra Purnima. Devotees of Hanuman offer special prayers to the Vanara God. Lord Hanuman who is a symbol of strength is believed to be an ardent devotee of Lord Ram. According to mythology even before his birth, it was predicted that Hanuman would be a devotee of Ram. It was Hanuman’s devotion to Lord Ram that helped him defeat Ravana after Sita’s abduction. Devotees flock Hanuman temple to offer special prayer to the God. Hanuman is believed to have magical powers with which he conquers evil spirits. On Hanuman Jayanti, devotees apply tilak of sindoor on their foreheads from Hanuman’s idol. Celebrations and Puja
Devotees on this day perform puja by offering vermilion or red cloth, with flowers like marigold, rose and offer laddu, halwa, banana as prasad, visit temple, carry out processions and religious gatherings. Various kinds of foods, sweets, and flowers are also offered to Lord Hanuman and distributed to his followers as Prasad.
In Maharashtra, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the full-moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra. While in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh devotees observe 41 days of Deeksha on Chaitra Purnima and conclude it on Hanuman Jayanthi day. In Tamil Nadu, Hanuman Jayanthi is celebrated on the Margazhi month of Moola nakshatra as Hanuman was born on the moola nakshatra in the particular month. In Karnataka, Hanuman Jayanti is observed on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi during Margashirsha month. The day is known as Hanuman Vratam.
But this year, amid coronavirus lockdown, no processions will be carried out and no religious gatherings are going to take place.
